The ‘Ship in a Shop’ project is costing £53,000 and has been funded by the Government’s Department for Communities and Local Government, the Arts Council and through a Social Care Reform Grant. It is also supported by Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, which made the shop unit available.

Artist in residence Rachel Gretton has designed a steel and glass sculpture. The design will be created and constructed within the shop over the project period. THe steel structure will be on-site in the shop in the mid-June.

As part of this project, a series of community glass workshops are being held. A total of 35 glass workshops are running between April and July 2010.

Selected glass pieces produced in the workshops will form part of the overall sculpture that is being created. The final piece will be on display when the town hosts the finale of The Tall Ships Races in August 2010.

Rachel is opening up one glass workshop to the public on the 7th July 2010. To allow individuals in the community to take part and experience the exciting arts project.

Fused Glass Course

Fused glass is a term used to describe one of many kiln formed techniques, which uses heat within a kiln to stick glass together. This process has many possibilities and this workshop will introduce students to the fundamental basics of fused and slumped glass.

This 10 week course will teach you everything you need to know to get started.  Topics covered include cutting glass, mold preparation, glass selection, project design, firing schedules, annealing, and compatibility testing.

Students will be introduced to several kiln glass techniques and experiment in each.  Using the skills learnt students would be encouraged to push their own designs ideas and produce a unique final piece that will be exhibited in a final exhibition.

I would like to welcome you to my new site!
